Mission statement

To help children and young people disadvantaged through poverty or disability, or otherwise vulnerable, in partnership with locally-managed centres in Benin, Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia and India. We also support well-prepared volunteers to offer practical help, skill sharing, and friendship.

Vision

We want to see happy, healthy children in our partner projects, enabled to reach their full potential, with opportunities to have productive and fulfilled lives.

Together with our in-country partners and over 600 volunteers, we have achieved so much. Watch our video celebrating our 30th Anniversary to find out more about the work we do.

How we work

We work in partnership with in-country managers to realise their vision of supporting vulnerable children and alleviating poverty within their communities. This means ownership remains within the local community and we are committed to supporting our project partners to move towards sustainability.

History

Hands Around the World was founded in 1994 by Lynda and David Steiner.

David, who for many years lived and worked as a doctor in general practice in Jersey in the Channel Islands, had become involved as a volunteer with the States of Jersey Overseas Aid Programme, during which time the plight of many people in developing countries came to be of great personal concern.

On their return to Britain in 1993 after a year at a rural hospital in Zambia, David and Lynda decided to use the experiences gained during the previous 22 years to set up an organisation which would offer practical assistance in response to a specific need, and the following year Hands Around the World was born.

HATW Jersey

Our Jersey branch (HATWJ) was established in 2007 and registered as a charitable trust in the Royal Court by long term local supporters, with the object of providing a channel of communication, funds and resources between local supporters in Jersey and the parent charity.

HATWJ subsequently developed its own direct links with projects in Rwanda, Uganda and Zambia through on-going visits by volunteers and with funding support from the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission.

Most of HATWJ projects are made possible through the generous support of Jersey Overseas Aid (JOA) who have recognized HATWJ as a local Jersey charity with active links with overseas communities. JOA’s support for HATWJ’s latest three-year Ubumwe partnership with schools in Rwanda has enabled improvements in teaching and learning environments in several schools.
