Increasing Access to Care for Children with Severe Disabilities

With support from HATW, the Disability Community Centre (DCC) is launching a vital project to provide targeted home-based care and therapy to 45 children with severe disabilities across six rural sub-counties in Meru County, Kenya. These children, most of whom live with conditions like cerebral palsy, face significant challenges such as limited mobility, speech impairment, and difficulty with everyday activities like swallowing. Support will be provided to address these challenges and improve wellbeing.

The project focuses on delivering home based physical therapy, training 78 parents and caregivers in sustainable care practices, and offering psychosocial and practical support through awareness raising forums. Additionally, the most economically vulnerable families will receive special nutrition support for six months.
By raising disability awareness and empowering families with care skills, the project not only improves the children’s quality of life but also fosters long-term community inclusion and resilience.
