Baswajit teaches the Computer Course at the NLC

Computer course at the NLC's Vocational Training Centre

In the last report I wrote about the Vocational Training Centre and the tailoring course for young women. One of the classrooms of the New Life Centre (NLC) school has now been given over to a Computer course for young people in the area. Alindra, the founder of the NLC, not only helps the children of this area but also those who have left school with no qualifications. So, the computer course will be open to those who are 16+. The course will run after school hours in the afternoon.

The local Government secondary schools have 100 – 150 children in the classes, which is why it is very difficult to learn. The parents who can afford to, send their children to tutors for extra tuition, otherwise it is hopeless to try to pass the exams.

When I was there in 2023, I visited two secondary schools with these huge class sizes. As a retired teacher I told the staff I couldn’t imagine what that would be like to have so many students in one class, and the staff said it is very difficult. They said you can’t set homework, and it is hard to control so many, so they have to split the children into groups based on ability.

So, the Computer course is intended to help those students who have left Secondary school with no qualifications and seem destined, as their parents are, to live a subsistence level. One of the past students of the NLC, Baswajit (pictured above) whom I also met in 2023, is a graduate in Computer Science, and he will be teaching on the course.

Baswajit started his own I.T. business which adjoins his parent’s grocery store, near to the school. Baswajit offers I.T. facilities that local people can use.

It is heart-warming to see an alumnus of the school, grateful for the education he received at the NLC and aware of the path it set him on, give back to the institution.

Wouldn’t you like to honour this dedication?
